Celebrity Project – The Moving Mask Workshops
In addition to the public performance in early April, the Celebrity Project will include a workshop in Mask Performance lead by Monkey Waterfall staff. Learn about the history and techniques of mask performance—but be prepared to have fun. Once normally reserved people put the masks on, many of their inhibitions melt away and everyone has a lot of fun at these workshops.
Participants in the workshop are under no obligation to perform in the April event. If you are interested in participating in the public performance and will commit to rehearsals that opportunity is available, too! No experience necessary. Masks provided.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to play, to take fun risks, and to explore the imagination. Through theatre and dance improvisational exercises, participants will play with masks to find character, story, and explore new movement possibilities. Yukie Shiroma and Ben Moffat—founders of Monkey Waterfall, a Honolulu-based dance theatre company—have performed and taught with masks nationally and internationally since 1990. Ben has recently spent a year studying the physical theatre technique of Jacques Lecoq at the London International School of Performing Arts.
The workshop will be in the dance studios in the Theatre Basement on: Saturday, February 13, 10 am – 1 pm
Open to anyone 15 + years old. Space is limited. Call 455-0385 to reserve a space. Cost $5 materials fee.
